Is “I’m a social media expert” the new “I’m a coach”?

I was talking to a very good friend today (but she’s going to remain anonymous unless she decides to reveal herself with a comment) – and we got discussing how in the past few months there have been so many self proclaimed ’social media experts’ popping up.

She said (I’m paraphrasing here) that being a social media expert is like saying you were a coach in 2007.

I had to agree. I know some really smart social media people here and there, but experts really are few and far between. (And this coming from someone who uses a person’s expertise to get them good publicity.) And even I know a thing or two about social media, but like most people I am learning something new every day.

Social media is a baby compared to other things. After all, Web 2.0 is a relatively new concept. So how can all these people claim to be experts?

Well, I’ll say it. They all can’t be! They know some, sure, but not everything about social media. Mayne one thing, like Twitter, or Facebook, or blogging, but not everything.

So when trying to develop your expertise, be specific – and original. It will be much easier to attract clients – and the media – when you do!
